Wise Design Decisions

Wise Design Decisions

One of my favorite reviews from a client is “Anne is not a design diva.” I like to provide a sensible, practical approach to interior design while also using my creative side, and I’m easy to work with. But, of course, I love to hear how happy my clients are with my work, and it’s important to follow up and see how things go after a project had been completed.

I recently had the pleasure of stopping in to visit a client and to freshen up a few items on a project that I worked on several years ago. Seeing the client’s home, and how well everything we selected and put together for the project still works, reinforces my philosophy of “Creative, Classic and Comfortable” design. The project allowed a lot of creativity while I adhered to basics such as establishing a flow of colors and materials that work well together, providing comfortable seating and work areas, selecting timeless pieces that never go out of style (rather than trendy pieces or colors that become outdated quickly) and working with the clients to create a look that they truly love and enjoy. Eight years after we completed this renovation and design project, the house feels as fresh and stylish as ever.

The overall color palette is neutral with pops of fresh colors that continue to work from year to year. Flooring (in this case sand colored tile with a nice soft texture, selected for ease of maintenance in a tropical setting) provides a low key background for sisal area rugs and colorful woven rugs. Counter tops feature beige limestone or pale green Costa Esmerelda granite to play up the light and airy feeling of the home. Furniture is mainly rattan or wicker, with the exception of a deep, plush, super comfortable sectional for the family room. I completed the overall tropical, beachy look of the project with fun accessories such as pillows, lamps, pottery and art. I even helped the client pick out dishes, flatware, and bed & bath linens to work with the interior design scheme. It’s nice to know the client still loves everything we picked after several years have gone by. I helped freshen things up a bit by adding some new art, throw pillows and tabletop accessories, but the total look has been beautiful all along. A nice example of classic, enduring design decisions!
